- D. Getting Started
-
-
- 1. First thing to do:
-
- When you receive this package, you should immediately make
- a copy of the original diskettes in case of loss or damage.
- Be sure to store the original diskettes in a safe place.
-
- If there is a file called "README.DOC" on your diskettes,
- please take a few moments to read the contents. This file,
- if present, may contain corrections to the manual or further
- information about SERVICES.
-
-
- 2. Installing SERVICES on your hard drive:
-
- SETUP_S will NOT install the SERVICES utility on any A: or
- B: drive - SERVICES is designed for hard disks only!
-
- You can create a directory for the SERVICES utility, or
- use a pre-existing one. You can name this directory as
- you wish (LSRGroup suggests that you name the directory
- "SERVICES"). Once you have decided which directory to
- use, copy all the files from the SERVICES diskette to
- this directory. Example:
-
- A:
- COPY A:*.* C:\SERVICES
- (If SERVICES is the correct path)
-
- Then, check into your SERVICES directory with the command:
-
- C: (If you've copied to drive C:)
- CD\SERVICES (If SERVICES is the correct path)
-
- Then, still at the DOS prompt, type the command:
-
- SETUP_S
-
- SETUP_S will offer you four choices on its main menu. The
- first choice, (S)etup Services, will be highlighted. Press
- the [Enter] key. Then press the [Enter] key again to create
- a file called SERVICES.CFG - Note that SERVICES will NOT run
- without this CFG file present in its path!
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- page 9
-
-
-
- SERVICES uses PKware's PKARC/PKXARC or PKPAK/PKUNPAK programs
- to manage your archived files. If these programs are not
- located in the same path with SERVICES, then SETUP_S will ask
- you for there location. If asked, then type in the correct
- path. Example:
-
- C:\PKWARE
-
- SETUP_S will then check you response to see if its a valid
- path. If you have typed an invalid path, SETUP_S will then
- tell you, "Bad Path or File Name". When this message clears,
- re-type the path. If you don't have any of these PKware
- products, press the [Esc] key.
-
- Note: If you have both PKARC/PKXARC and PKPAK/PKUNPAK in the
- same path, SETUP_S will default to PKPAK/PKUNPAK.
-
- SERVICES uses Vernon D. Beurg's LIST.COM to allow you to
- browse through any ASCII or binary file. If LIST.COM is not
- located in the same path with SERVICES, then SETUP_S will ask
- you for its location. If asked, then type in the correct
- path. Example:
-
- C:\UTILITY
-
- SETUP_S will then check your response to see if its a valid
- path. If you have typed an invalid path, SETUP_S will then
- tell you, "Bad Path or File Name". When this message clears,
- re-type the path. If you don't have LIST.COM, press [Esc].
-
- If you have a "browse" program, other than LIST.COM, and
- wish to use it with SERVICES, then either rename it to
- LIST.COM, or, remove the Read-only attribute from the
- SERVICES.CFG file. Then, use your text editor to modify
- line 4 of SERVICES.CFG for the complete path and file name
- of your favorite "browse" program.
-
- That's all you need to do to install the SERVICES utility.
-
- If you wish to include SERVICES' directory in your systems
- PATH statement, read the next section of this document.
-
- 3. Modifying your AUTOEXEC.BAT's PATH command:
-
- If the SERVICES Utility is located in a directory that is
- included in you PATH statement, you can then load and run
- it from any directory or any drive on your system.
-
- If SERVICES is located in a directory that is not pathed,
- then you cannot load and run it without first checking into
- SERVICES' directory.
-
- page 10
-
-
- To modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT's path command, scroll to and
- choose the option, "(A)dd PATH= to AUTOEXEC.BAT".
-
- SETUP_S will first check your system's environment to see
- if the directory that SERVICES is located is already pathed.
-
- If the environment does not have the appropriate path,
- SETUP_S will determine where COMSPEC (boot disk) is. Then it
- looks for your AUTOEXEC.BAT on that drive's root directory.
-
- If you don't have an AUTOEXEC.BAT, then SETUP_S will create
- one and it will contain two lines of code.
- Example:
-
- ECHO OFF
- PATH=C:\SERVICES;
-
- (If your path is not C:\SERVICES, don't worry, the correct
- path is written to your AUTOEXEC.BAT)
-
- If you have an AUTOEXEC.BAT, then SETUP_S will look for the
- line of code that begins with the word, "PATH" (not case
- sensitive). If it finds it, then it will check to see if
- SERVICES location is already in the path command. If not,
- then SETUP_S will check to see if your path command will be
- longer than 255 characters when SERVICES' path is included.
- If the length of the path command will exceed 255 characters,
- then SETUP_S will display a message that states, "Cannot
- Append to Path Statement - Path Command to Long." If this
- occurs, you AUTOEXEC.BAT will remain unchanged.
-
- If SETUP_S finds the path command and the length will not
- exceed 255 characters, then SETUP_S will add SERVICES' path
- at the end of the existing path statement.
-
- If SETUP_S cannot find the path statement, it then looks for
- a line of code that begins with the word, "SET" (not case
- sensitive). If it finds it, then it hunts for the next line
- that doesn't begin with, "SET". When this condition is met,
- SETUP_S will create a path command.
-
- If SETUP_S cannot find the lines that begin with "PATH" or
- "SET", then it goes to the top of your AUTOEXEC.BAT and looks
- for the words, "ECHO OFF" (case insensitive). If it finds
- this, then it will write your path command as the next line.
- Otherwise, your path command will be the very top line of
- code in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
-
- SETUP_S will rename your original AUTOEXEC.BAT as a back-up
- with the name, "AUTOEXEC.BAK". And, SETUP_S will set the
- same attributes your original AUTOEXEC.BAT had to your new
- AUTOEXEC.BAT.
-
- page 11
-
- If SETUP_S has modified or created the AUTOEXEC.BAT, then,
- when you exit the SETUP_S program, you will be informed,
-
- "Your AUTOEXEC.BAT has had the PATH modified."
- "You must REBOOT to Actualize the New Path."
-
- Reboot your system to actualize the new path.
-
-
- II. Notes and Tips
-
- 1. The first time:
-
- The first time you run SERVICES, once it loads, press H for
- the Help. You will be presented a complete, on-line manual.
- Browse through it - its quick and animated - and familiarize
- yourself with this system. If you press [Ctrl] + H, or press
- [Alt] + H, you will first be presented with context sensitive
- Help. If you are familiar with the operation of SERVICES, you
- can remove the help program (SERVHELP.EXE and SERVICES.HLP)
- from the directory - This will free up 121,375 Bytes (approx.).
-
- 2. Typing file names:
-
- Whenever SERVICES requests you to type a file name, do not,
- *REPEAT* do not type in the dot - pressing the [Enter] key will
- automatically insert the dot for you. The second press of the
- [Enter] key will process the name that you typed.
-
- 3. File Protection:
-
- When you designate files for Protection, they are protected from
- accidental erasure from SERVICES only. You can still erase these
- protected files from DOS. Why designate files for Protection?
- Because, if you establish a Read-Only attribute, it may be pro-
- tected from erasure, but then you cannot write to that file.
-
- Designating files for protection keeps these files free from
- erasure while working only within SERVICES. Use this feature to
- protect your spread-sheets or data bases. Yet, still be free to
- change them from within your spread-sheet or data base program.
-
- Note that files designated for Protection cannot be erased by
- SERVICES, cannot be renamed by SERVICES, nor can their designated
- directories be renamed by SERVICES.
-
- 4. Invalid drives:
-
- If you try to copy to a floppy (let's say the floppy drive is A:)
- and SERVICES informs you, "Not Configured for Drive A:", and your
- computer does, indeed have a drive A:, then you are endeavoring
- to copy to a non-formatted disk. Format the disk and all should
- be ok.
-
- page 12
-
- 5. Erasing files designated as Protected:
-
- If you have file(s) designated for protection and wish to erase
- them, use the SETUP_S utility from services ([Ctrl] + P) and
- choose the option to remove these files from the Protection
- List, or, move them to a different, non-protected directory, then
- erase them.
-
- 6. Erasing Password from SETUP_S.EXE:
-
- SERVICES' Setup Utility can have a password, independent of any
- password established for SERVICES. If you have created a pass-
- word for the Setup Utility and wish to erase it, you erase it
- in the same way as you would for SERVICES. To find out how to
- erase a password, load the SERVICES program. Once SERVICES is
- loaded, press the H key for Help, then press the J key for
- information about passwords.
-
- Note that you cannot receive any help regarding passwords if
- a password exists for SERVICES - This keeps un-authorized per-
- sons from learning how to change a password and keeps you from
- being the recipient of "dirty tricks". You must erase your
- SERVICES' password before you can receive help with it.
-
- 7. Forgot your password?
-
- Your only recourse is to re-copy SERVICES.EXE (or SETUP_S.EXE if
- the password you forgot is for the Setup Utility) from your
- back-up copy.
-
- 8. Directory names with extensions:
-
- Newer versions of DOS allow you to create directories with a three
- character extension (just like a file extension). SERVICES will
- read these directory names and display them - it will not, however,
- allow you to create a directory name with more than 8 characters.
- You can still create an extension but the total directory name is
- limited to 8 characters (That's because the author of SERVICES
- believes that using extensions for directories demonstrates poor
- disk organization).
-
- 9. Exiting Menus:
-
- Some of SERVICES' pull-down, pull-up, and pop-on options boxes do
- not display the option to exit. In ALL of SERVICES' menus, the
- [Esc] key will bring you to successive, previous menus.
-
- 10. Viruses:
-
- If you are using a program, such as FLUSHOT to protect your system
- from computer viruses, be advised that SERVICES and SETUP_S will
- change their size, if you have created passwords for them. Both
- SERVICES and SETUP_S will perform absolute disk read/writes and
- both can perform extensive disk operations.

- SPECIAL NOTE
-
-
- Thank you for registering SERVICES. With your registration, you are helping
- to keep this independent programmer from having to work for giant corporations
- or for the military/industrial complex, making programs for smarter missiles
- or Star Wars systems. For this, I sincerely thank you for your registration.
-
- You should be aware that if you are using Phil Katz's file compression pro-
- grams or Vernon D. Beurg's LIST.COM, and have not registered them, then you
- should take the time to do so now. When you register SERVICES, you are not
- registering any other utility by any other author.
-
- Thank you,
